"Just In! JAPANESE DWARF TREES!,"
(1939), this advertisement reads:
A special shipment of these fascinating and attractive trees. Illustrated is a dwarf pine tree perfect
in detail having lost none of its impressive beauty through the amazing process necessary to retain
diminutiveness. Others in the group: Wistaria, Cherry, Peony, Juniperus Chinensis, Pinus Pentaphylla,
and Azalea. Each tree is growing in a separate pot. Remember, these can only be imported at this
time of the year and as the supply is limited, it would be wise to make your choice of these intriguing
plants immediately. On arrival they were placed in the care of a leading local nurseryman and
proclaimed to be in good shape. Priced from 3/6 to 69/6

1 From The Argus (Melbourne, Vic), 22 April 1939,
pg. 3. Brought to RJB's
attention in Facebook message from Lindsay Farr, 02 Jan 2013. It would be interesting to know which
company was the grower and/or shipper of these from Japan, and why the importation period was about the month
of April -- spring in Japan and fall in Australia. We "suspect this consignment was shipped in the
dormant Japanese winter, arriving in the early Melbourne autumn to be made presentable by the nurseryman before
offered for sale... When I first worked in a nursery in 1960 [in Australia], a shipment arrived from
Holland. All plants were packed in peat and in poor presentable condition. A burst of late
summer/early autumn, served as a fake spring. Japanese plants were shipped in a similar manner according
to local folklore." (Per Facebook messages from Lindsay Farr to RJB, 03 Jan 2013.) |
